"untitled" by simple plan

I heard this song on the radio, and I was so moved by the lyrics. Click on the pic to see the video. A very powerful song. If you have teenagers, please talk to them about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Untitled
How could this happen to me?
I made my mistakes
Got no where to run
The night goes on
As I’m fading away
I’m sick of this life
I just wanna scream
How could this happen to me?

now for a real post

It’s been a while since I just sat down and wrote something. I’ve been twiddling with my site for roughly the last 2 weeks, trying to make it friendly for both users and their browsers. What a challenge this has been. In the last month, I’ve bought 2 books on web design, and I’ve learned a lot. But it gets frustrating from time to time trying to make everything mesh together. I like the journalized theme, but I realize this theme will only work for people who have their desktop settings at 1024 x 768; if you’re set at 800 x 600, then it all looks squished together, with stuff “overflowing” into other sections. The default theme would work better at 800 x 600, but that requires me to get the theme switcher to work. I really hope to have that running by Sunday.

Work is what it is – it sucks, of course. “Database” is the word, and it will drive me nuts for the next 2 weeks. I tried to work my way out of having to design a new database, but my manager insists this is what the department needs. This will be a major challenge for me as I juggle this project and prepare the office for my upcoming vacation – only 2 weeks and 2 days away! I can’t wait – this is what I’ve been craving for more than 3 months. I’m so excited about it that I’ve been talking to my dog about it. Then it occurred to me that he has no idea what will hit him in 2 weeks, since he’ll be in a kennel while we’re gone. I hate boarding him, and I know he hates being boarded. Salem will be fine – I just don’t like it that the one thing I want most for me will be the one thing he dreads.

Vacation will be in Orlando, Florida to celebrate the 5th wedding anniversary for CL and me. We got married in Walt Disney World, and we haven’t been back since 2000. We’ll stay in a time share (thanks to Mom and Dad), and CL’s parents and D will join us. We’ll do the usual Disney stuff, along with Universal Studios. After that week, D and my in-laws will return to NC while CL and I head on up to Tybee Island, Georgia for some sun, sand, rest, and relaxation. We’ll return home in time to get Salem before the 4th of July weekend.

If you’re like D and you’re going to see Star Wars – Episode III: Revenge of the Sith again (and again), check out this list of easter eggs. When it somes to Star Wars, only repeated viewings reveal the good stuff.

theme switcher deactivated

I turned off the theme switcher because it wasn’t working properly. What it’s supposed to do is allow the reader their own theme preference. But I discovered that when they click on a link to a post or a page within my site, it reverts back to my main theme. That’s not supposed to happen. So I need to research the WP forums for a fix; I also bought a book at Borders last night on PHP. As soon as I can reconfigure the plugin, I will reactivate it.

theme switcher

I implemented a plugin for WordPress called the Theme Switcher, located in the right hand column towards the bottom. With this, you can change the theme of my blog. Actually, I’m using the same themes as this one, so the only changes you’ll see is the color style. I need to configure the settings on other themes in order for the blog to display all my links, Flickr picbox, etc. That’ll take some time. Once that’s done, my blog can take on a new personality just by the reader clicking on what theme they would like to see. The Journalized theme is my favorite layout and it will be my primary theme. Pretty soon, I’ll have more to choose from.

a walk in the park

finally!

I finally got what I want using Flickr. Not that I won’t use the other code I’ve been working with. At least with Flickr, not only can I post pics to the blog, but the pics will also go to my Flickr account as well.

This is perfect for vacation! I won’t have access to a computer, but I can use my phone to post entries to my blog, record audio, and send random pics from time to time. Don’t get me wrong – I will be on vacation, and I will act like I’m on vacation. But the geek in me wants to keep everyone informed as to how much fun I’m having while I’m away.

almost there…

I was able to post with a pic to my blog via cell phone. I’m so excited I got it to work! There’s only one thing bugging me – the “little” instructions on how to use Verizon Wireless that are automatically sent with each message my phone delivers. I need to figure out a fix to remove all that gibberish so it’s just the title, post, and pic. Gonna need to take some time to figure that out.

I did find out that Flickr can allow you to post to both your Flickr account and your blog via cell phone. I tested it just as I left work; it posted on Flickr, but not here. If I can get Flickr to post here, I have nothing to worry about and my moblog is all set up. In the meantime, I have one method that’s flawed but works, and another that’s nearly perfect but doesn’t work. Geez.

"testing 1, 2, 3"

As you can see from Monday’s post, my audio blog was successful. I’ve been having problems with Audioblogger in which I can’t get it to post to this blog. I can post to my Blogger‘s site, but it takes away from the continuity of my own site.

So now I’m trying Audioblog.com. I’m so happy with the results! I love the way it posts immediately and with a player too! If I want to, I can also do podcasts using Audioblog’s software.

I’ve also been doing tests for my moblog (“mobile weblog”) – basically me blogging with my cell phone. I have a new camera phone (I used it at Cold Stone), and I’d like to be able to send pics via email to my blog. This part has been so frustrating for me. I don’t understand much about the PHP language, and I’m missing a certain tweak to make this part work. I’ve been testing with regular email, with some good and not-so-good results. I hope I can get this to work before vacation. This way, I can send random pics from our trip to go with an occasional audio blog.

cold stone

cold stone thumb
Went to Cold Stone Creamery in O’Fallon today. It’s a new ice cream place (well known in places like Chicago). In addition to regular flavors, they have gourmet ice cream flavors (like cake batter, peanut butter). Then you get to mix in pretty much whatever you want. Because CL and I were overwhelmed to begin with, we took suggestions from them. CL had Cherry Cake Double Take, while I had Mud Pie Mojo (mine actually called for coffee ice cream, but I got vanilla since I hate coffee). CL and I enjoyed them, but all we can say is it is very RICH. We needed a drink to wash it down, or a burger to neutralize all the sugar. To be honest with you, I couldn’t stand to think about ice cream afterward. Not that we won’t go back! We now know that we don’t necessarily need all the mix-in’s. If you get the chance and need an ice cream fix (or just need sugar), check out Cold Stone.
