the seven phases of owning an ipod

Hilarious and true …

Every iPod owner passes through seven distinct phases, this illustrated guide depicts the journey all iPod owners must undertake (and does it through funny little stick figures)

The Seven Phases of Owning an iPod – An Illustrated Journey | digg story

I’m going through phases 3 thru 6 (although I tend to deny phase 5). I’m trying to avoid phase 7; with my recent promotion, however, I have yet to get a nice gift for myself (I’m thinking the latest “X-Men” DVD shouldn’t count).

dangerous cities

Report finds St. Louis most dangerous U.S. city (MSNBC.com)

Go figure – two baseball towns who just competed in the World Series, and they happen to be labeled the “most dangerous cities” in the US.

On a perfect day, St Louis celebrates (MLB.com)

Never mind the chill and rain that plagued the World Series — on Sunday, when thousands upon thousands of St. Louisans and Cardinals fans took to the streets of downtown, Mother Nature delivered a day perfectly designed for festivities.

I'm a Cardinals fan

… in case you didn’t know.

Cardinals celebrate their 10th title

The St Louis Cardinals are World Champions, and I couldn’t be any happier! As a fan, it always feels good to be part of the celebration when your team wins. However, not being from St Louis, you’d think I’d stay true to my original faves.

WS Game 5 – St Louis 4, Detroit 2

Jeff Weaver pitched 8 strong innings

Cardinals secure first title since 1982 (MLB.com)

Jeff Weaver gave yet another brilliant playoff performance, twirling eight innings with just four hits and two runs — one earned. Weaver, known for postseason letdowns before this year, pitched as effectively, as consistently, as any Cardinals starter this October.

big mistake?

Kenny Rogers won't start Game 5

No Rogers in Game 5? No chance for Tigers (Wojciechowski – ESPN.com)

‘This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.’

The Tigers finally hit the ball, but the catching and throwing part? Not so much. For that they can blame themselves, as well as the Cardinals, who continue to grind down the Tigers into baseball mulch.

WS Game 4 – St Louis 5, Detroit 4

Cards one win from title after thriller (MLB.com)

Eckstein hits the game-winner

They call the new Busch Stadium “Baseball Heaven”. It seems all of St Louis showed up at the pearly gates, and David Eckstein led the way. Eck was 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 3 doubles, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 8th.

rain and pain

The weather this week is just downright miserable, and I feel the same way. By all means, today was not horrible. I guess it’s just been one heck of a week at work, and my body is telling me “Knock it off!” My headache returned, and it hadn’t hurt this bad since 3 weeks ago. I may have to call the doc again next week if it doesn’t get better; I hate pumping myself full of pills.

database errors

My site was down this morning due to problems with my databases. I opened a ticket with Vizaweb Support to see what was going on. The errors showed a table had crashed, repairs failing, and corruption. Super. I like Vizaweb a lot, but I’m having too many of these database problems lately. Come springtime, I will look into other options.

Will post later on the hot subject here in St Louis…

delay

Currently, Game 4 of the World Series between the Cardinals and the Tigers is in a rain delay. I’ve got Fox on one TV (where I usually play video games) while CL and I watch our other shows Jericho and Lost on another. The rain has been pretty much non-stop all day today. It hasn’t been a downfall, but a constant drizzle. It must be exciting to go to a World Series game, but I think I’d be more comfortable at home than at Busch Stadium where it’s cold and wet.

birthday greetings

Happy Birthday, Daniel! Since your birthday falls within a week of Halloween, I want you to check this out.

Chris Carpenter is dominant in Game 3

Carpenter dominant in Fall Classic debut (MLB.com)

Everyone’s underdog is now everyone’s favorite (Wojciechowski – ESPN.com)

The Tigers are playing as if they’ll be charged a late fee if the Series lasts seven games. Carpenter handcuffed them to the bedpost and noogied them to death, allowing just three hits, issuing no walks and striking out six.

rambling

So much is happening these days, I don’t even know where to begin.

My headaches come and go. Work is not as stressful as I try to continue to separate both jobs. I was assured that my replacement will be starting in a few weeks. With the remodel finished, IT is somewhat back to normal.

TWiT "on life support"

TWiT.tv

“No TWiT Today” | digg story

I’ll decide what happens to TWiT, the show, when I come back, but at this point it looks like it’s on life support and the heart monitor is flatlining.

This Week in Tech (TWiT)
is a podcast (or as Leo Laporte would call it, a “netcast“) that features a roundtable discussion of latest news in technology. Unfortunately, Leo feels he may end it due to lack of interest from the original cast.

Pujols hits a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning

Cards shock Tigers in Game 1 behind rookie Reyes (ESPN.com)

Don’t count Cards out so quickly (Wojciechowski – ESPN.com)

We loved the Cardinals — until mid-June. Then they became the Chicago Cubs, then the Cardinals, then the Cubs, and then who-knows-what by the end of the season. Whatever they were, they didn’t look like a team that was going to require a victory parade. But now the romance is back, or at least it should be after the way the Cardinals sent the Tigers to the chop shop. They neutered the soldout and once-geeked Comerica Park crowd. And they neutralized the Tigers’ home-field advantage.

MLB to offer individual World Series games to fans on DVD

This is my first story submitted to Digg

For the first time ever, this year Major League Baseball fans will have an opportunity to buy a commemorative DVD of an individual World Series game, and receive it within days after the event.

top five on friday #94

Top 5 Worst Songs by your Favorite Artist(s)

I’m a day late; here it is, in no particular order …

  • “One Foot Out The Door” – Van Halen – the 2 things this song has going for it is (a) it’s on probably the best VH album ever (Fair Warning), and (b) a killer solo that unfortunately fades out to close the album
  • “Spanked” – Van Halen – a heavy, bass-driven song that dies quickly thanks to the poorly written lyrics of Sammy Hagar
  • “Some Kind of Monster” – Metallica - a horrible mishmash of nothing
  • “Purify” - Metallica – another loud mishmash; surprisingly has a good riff, but unfortunately it’s at the end of the song
  • “Up For Breakfast” – Van Halen – a song driven by Eddie’s guitar funk; it could’ve sparked the rebirth of VH, but sadly, Sammy’s food/sex metaphors are just too silly to enjoy this one

Cardinals celebrate winning NL pennant

St Louis 3, NY Mets 1

“I was praying to God,” said Yadier Molina, “to keep that ball away from Endy Chavez.”

Molina’s heroics give Cardinals an unlikely pennant

remodel

analyst office area The past week at work has been interesting. The remodel is nearly complete; I went ahead and moved into my new desk today. It’s certainly a departure from the hand-me-down desks IT is used to having at our organization.
