They were the greatest rock act since the mighty Led Zeppelin. Now they’re probably the biggest joke in music. I am a huge fan of Van Halen (thanks to my cousin Ren). I enjoy listening to both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar (I refuse to compare the two). Then Eddie got sober, and that’s when it seemed like everything started to fall apart for the next 10 years.

Sammy quit. Dave rejoined the band to record new material but was promptly fired after VH’s reunion appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. VH hired Extreme’s Gary Cherone and released the aptly titled “Van Halen III”. The album sold poorly, while the tour had mixed reviews. While recording their next album, Gary quit. Eddie and his wife, Valerie Bertinelli, separated after 20 years of marriage; she filed for divorce 4 years later. Sammy rejoined the band for a greatest hits compilation and tour, but his relationship with Eddie exploded as the tour ended. Eddie records music for a porn film. Bassist Michael Anthony, who’s been touring with Sammy in a band called “The Other Half” (they perform VH tunes), has been replaced by Eddie’s 15 year old son Wolfgang (who’s only played bass for 3 months).

And now Eddie’s calling for Dave to rejoin the band for a tour. They couldn’t make this work 10 years ago, I don’t know that it will work now.
