monday shuffle 090709
I was tagged in July on Facebook with the note below. I think I will make it a weekly meme of some sort just to see what comes up each time.
Once you’ve been tagged… (1) Turn on your MP3 player. (2) Go to SHUFFLE songs mode. (3) Write down the first 15 songs that come up–song title and artist–NO editing/cheating, please. (4) Choose some number of people (more than zero, fewer than all) to be tagged. It is generally considered to be in good taste to tag the person who tagged you. (Edit: If you’ve already done this note and had the nerve not to include me, feel free to just forward your original one my way — these things take too much work as is.)
If I tagged you, it’s because I want to know more about your musical tastes, or at least a random sampling thereof.
(To do this, go to “NOTES” under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, enter your 15 Shuffle Songs, Click ‘Preview’ below to tag 25 people (in the right hand corner of the app) then click Publish, the little blue box at the bottom of your screen).

take me back tuesday #135
Let’s go CD shopping!
Back in the day before the internet ruled the earth and people went to malls etc…
What was your favorite record store?
When I was a teenager, I always shopped at Birdland Records in Virginia Beach, VA. Great selection and great service.
Are there any non-chain stores that you still frequent for your music needs?
Not really. I only buy CD’s if they’re of a decent price (I won’t pay more than $12 if possible). Or I just put it on my Christmas wishlist for family to buy for me. Otherwise, it’s digital downloads for me (iTunes, eMusic).
What was your favorite “find” at your favorite store?
In the summer of 1989, I bought what became my favorite album by the BoDeans – Home (featuring “You Don’t Get Much”)

friday’s feast #138
Appetizer – When you travel, which mode of transportation do you prefer?
It’s quicker to fly, but I definitely prefer the experience of a road trip. There’s nothing like hitting the open road and encountering new things along the way.
Soup – Have you ever met a blogging friend in person?
No, not yet, but that would be very cool!
Salad – When was the last time you were really, really tired?
These days, working “the lab” has been exhausting for me.
Main Course – If you could have dinner with any one fictional character from a book or movie, who would it be?
Ferris Bueller. That would be a fun evening.
Dessert – Fill in the blank: One day, I hope to see _______________.
my stepson Daniel fulfill his dream of becoming a director. I’m probably his harshest critic, but he’s a good kid, and I should encourage him to follow his dreams.

monday music mambo
Today is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, so I hereby proclaim today as Drummer Day!
- Name some of your favorite drummers. Or name a drummer if you don’t have any favorites.
John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Dave Grohl of Nirvana, Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Alex Van Halen of Van Halen - What song contains your favorite drum performance?
This was tough … couldn’t name just one- “In My Time Of Dying” from Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin
- “Leper Messiah” – from Master of Puppets by Metallica
- “In Bloom” – from Nevermind by Nirvana
- “Girl Gone Bad” – from 1984 by Van Halen
-
Do you prefer the drummer to simply keep a beat, or do you like him or her to show off a bit?
The beat is always important (but nothing wrong with a little improv here and there). -
If you were a drummer, how would you personalize your drum kit?
I’m not a drummer, so I wouldn’t know one kit from another. As a kid with drumsticks, I always tried emulating Big Al’s performances, so probably a kit similar to his.

Dessert -
