end of an era

Andre Agassi The last of the Fab Five (ESPN.com)

“He is the last of his fabled generation still playing, and when he shoulders his racket bag after his final match at the U.S. Open, he’ll formally end an era in American men’s tennis that may be impossible to replicate.”

Since coming to the Midwest, I somewhat lost interest in tennis. I haven’t played competitively since the early 90′s. In those days, I always imagined myself as Andre Agassi, with his powerful forehand and two-handed backhand. I even grunted like he did. Even though my personality was more like Pete Sampras, I still wanted to be like Andre. He was the rebel who wore flashy shirts, long hair, and denim shorts; his commercials were like rock videos. His rivalry with Sampras was magical; fitting that Sampras’ last match was with Agassi in the US Open. We can only hope that Agassi’s last match will be as thrilling. He will definitely be missed.

Pluto

Scientists decide Pluto’s no longer a planet (MSNBC.com)

Say it isn’t so! Sad to see that less than 5% of the world’s astronomers decided the dwarf planet’s fate. Someone will have to come up with a new mnemonic for the solar system; ”My Very Easy Method: Just Set Up Nine Planets” minus the P doesn’t make sense anymore.

John C. Dvorak sums it up best: “The only real question is, does it really matter? It’s still out there, no matter what we call it.”

A Storm’s Fury

downed tree

450,000 Without Power, Widespread Damage Throughout Area (KSDK.com)

Dust storms. Gusty winds. Lightning. Overturned tractor trailers.

We were fortunate the storm grazed our area. The worst we got were the winds and lightning. Hardly a drop of rain. Unfortunately, today is expected to be the hottest day yet with temps reaching 101 and heat indices between 115 and 120. And there are people with no power due to the storm. If we lost power, I would probably have stayed home to keep Salem cool in this heat. Sometimes, it sucks to live in the Midwest.

friday five – 80’s

I’m late with this, but what the heck …

1) Favourite movie of the 1980s? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – As much as I hate to admit it, I was, still am, and always will be Cameron.

2) Favourite musician/group of the 1980s? Van Halen, and I like both Dave and Sammy.

3) Favourite TV show of the 1980s? At the time, “Who’s The Boss?” (I had a thing for Alyssa Milano). These days, I would say “Cheers”.

4) Favourite invention of the 1980s? At the time, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). These days, I’d have to say the compact disc.

5) World Event from the 1980s that stands out in your mind? The Challenger explosion.

1,000,000,000 songs

NY Times article | Apple’s announcement

99 cents not only bought Alex Ostrovsky a song off of iTunes, it won him an iMac, 10 (that’s right, ten!) iPods, and a $10,000 gift card to the music store – all for downloading the billionth song.

Lucky kid!

Pasado’s Safe Haven needs your help

Over 2 weeks have passed since Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, and rescuers from Pasado’s Safe Haven are finding animals barely alive in homes. The situation is dire. The rescuers need supplies, hot meals, and more people to help with the enormous task of finding and saving these animals.
pitbull

The stories are very sad to read. If I could leave my job and my family to help, I would. But I don’t think I’m strong enough to handle the sight of a poor animal under these conditions.

If you can help, PLEASE do so:

send letters of thanks and encouragement to:

9-11-01

I remember …

  • telling my coworkers about the house Christine and I looked at 2 days prior and were planning to buy.
  • listening to a coworker say she heard on the radio a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center.
  • listening to the radio all day as the events unfolded in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.
  • emailing my mother and father and fearing the worst since they both work at a military base.
  • sighing relief and thanking God when they both responded that they were ok.
  • waiting impatiently for CNN.com, USAToday.com, or any news site to load up with up-to-date headlines.
  • thinking to myself, “Can this be happening to us? Why??”
  • wondering if anyone was safe at all.
  • coming home and watching the TV news replay everything over and over and over again.
  • discussing with Christine on whether we should tell Daniel about what had happened.
  • waiting in line for nearly an hour at the gas station.
  • crying and praying for those we had lost and for our country.

In central New Orleans, a Web firm pushes on

Employees of New Orleans-based Web firm, Intercosmos Media Group Inc., have chosen to stay with their servers, located in a 27-story skyscraper. They’re goal is to keep the servers, which house some 800,000 Web sites, up and running.
