walking with bears
Mr. Tony discusses what one should do when walking with bears on The Tony Kornheiser Show on 3WT.
tony and the animals
I’ve been enjoying The Tony Kornheiser Show on Washington Post Radio. I’ve watched Tony take on Mike Wilbon on ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption (PTI), and he’s a hoot. When I discovered his radio show on iTunes, I was hooked for life. This show is so funny and entertaining that it has become my favorite podcast.
[UPDATE: Tony can now be heard on 3WT Radio]
One of the running themes on his show is the theory that animals are planning a revolt against the human race. Listen to Tony read “Excerpts from a Cat’s Diary”:

TWiT “on life support”

I’ll decide what happens to TWiT, the show, when I come back, but at this point it looks like it’s on life support and the heart monitor is flatlining.
This Week in Tech (TWiT) is a podcast (or as Leo Laporte would call it, a “netcast“) that features a roundtable discussion of latest news in technology. Unfortunately, Leo feels he may end it due to lack of interest from the original cast.

recap/update
What a day. What a week. It’s all a blur. And I still have another day (damn).
- My partner’s off, so I have extra duties on my to-do list at work. My boss asked – no, I should say – begged for my help this afternoon. Offered me overtime. I said, “Sure!”
- Opportunity awaits: I put a bid in on a position (tech support) within the organization. Only 2 fellow co-workers know I’m contemplating this change. If they offer it to me, a few factors ($) will decide it for me.
- D’s been lacking some thought to the consequences of his actions (and his words). Hopefully, his mother and I have gotten through to him after two rough nights this week. Plain and simple – don’t make me angry. If it makes me mad, then don’t go there.
- I’ve tried twice in the last week to record my own podcast/audioblog via the MD recorder, but the results have been … eh. I may try again this weekend.
- Pretty soon, the current photoblog with My-Expressions.com will be gone since my free trial will be ending. Been working on a new one using WordPress. Don’t know why I didn’t think about using WP before. No sense in paying if I can do it myself. It’s going well, but I’m gonna need some help on some issues with archiving and EXIF details (camera data). When it’s ready to go, I’ll throw it out there for viewing.
- $2.58 a gallon. I don’t let my tank empty anymore. I just top it off every week when I think the price is low enough before it jumps again. This way, I only pay 5 or 6 bucks instead of 30 to 40. Last time I did was a week ago; it was “cheap” at $2.43. This is nothing if this expert is right about 2006.
- It’s hot outside. Again. If it’s not hot, it’s raining. If it’s not raining, it’s hot. This must be what it’s like in the Philippines. Can’t do anything really, unless you enjoy being sweaty or wet. Forecast says heat index of 110 for Friday. Poor Salem – his daily walk has become a weekends-only ritual.
TGIF tomorrow. Make the most of it, and the weekend will reward you.
diggnation and itunes
What a mess. And all for a top ranking.
- iTunes Podcast Ranking System Easily Manipulated (digg.com)
- well looks like we killed diggnation on itunes. (digg.com)
- Diggnation pulled off iTunes? (Revision3.com)
Who’s at fault? Not Apple. Not Revision3. The fans get obsessed with what they love, and this is what happens. The number 1 ranking only lasted so long, then the show itself is gone. Revision3 is already popular (look at the server problems they have; just like TWiT). I love what I listen to. And how do I reward those who create it? By staying subscribed and listening to it. Don’t cheat the system.
what i’ve been listening to …
We used to listen to Y98, but the music has been repetitious. I love the music, but you can only hear so much of the same songs. Some of us listen to KEZK; good stuff too, but most of the time, it’s soft rock. Lately, I listen to these stations only when I want to win a contest.
We started listening to the Arch, a new station that plays “70′s, 80′s, and whatever we want”. When I first heard the stuff they played, I was impressed. I was hearing good music, an eclectic mix of today and yesterday. You’ll hear Little River Band, Black Eyed Peas, ELO, Avril Lavigne. And they never play any song twice in the same day. Almost like listening to one’s iPod.
But I must say the Arch has its faults. They are heavy on the 70′s stuff. Not that I don’t like the music. It’s just that maybe 7 out of 10 songs you hear is from the 70′s. The Eagles. Lots of stuff by the Eagles. They are right in saying they don’t repeat their music that day. I heard “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison the other day; hadn’t heard that on the radio in over a decade. I heard it again yesterday. I’ve heard several songs 2 or 3 times this week and haven’t heard them in over 10, maybe 20 years! It’s like their playlist repeats itself after 2 days. They need a more balanced mix. But it is whatever they want.
Instead, I’m listening to podcasts on the pod. I’m trying new shows to get a feel for what’s out there. But I love the tech stuff. TWiT-This Week In Tech is my favorite right now. I love Leo Laporte’s KFI show – I learn a lot from other people’s problems! And Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht do a great job with Diggnation, a recap of the top stories on Kevin’s creation, Digg.com. If you haven’t listened to podcasts, give them a try.

“testing 1, 2, 3″
As you can see from Monday’s post, my audio blog was successful. I’ve been having problems with Audioblogger in which I can’t get it to post to this blog. I can post to my Blogger‘s site, but it takes away from the continuity of my own site.
So now I’m trying Audioblog.com. I’m so happy with the results! I love the way it posts immediately and with a player too! If I want to, I can also do podcasts using Audioblog’s software.
I’ve also been doing tests for my moblog (“mobile weblog”) – basically me blogging with my cell phone. I have a new camera phone (I used it at Cold Stone), and I’d like to be able to send pics via email to my blog. This part has been so frustrating for me. I don’t understand much about the PHP language, and I’m missing a certain tweak to make this part work. I’ve been testing with regular email, with some good and not-so-good results. I hope I can get this to work before vacation. This way, I can send random pics from our trip to go with an occasional audio blog.

finally, the weekend
Glad this week is over. Need to see a doctor about all the pain I’ve been having. And besides laundry and yard work, I’m gonna relax this weekend. Been playing with the “theme” for my blog, and I’ve changed it a couple of times. I like the way this looks (Kubrick theme), but I also like the notebook theme! I can’t make up my mind. I want this site to look good but be user-friendly as well.
I’m also working on an audio blog page. This page will be strictly for when I’m on vacation. I won’t be able to update the site, but I will post via cell phone as to how things are going. I may even post pictures, since I’m getting a new camera phone!! Can’t wait to play with that new toy.
I don’t think I will post another podcast until I know what I’m doing. D and I will probably try another show when the time is right. In fact, we will probably record on the way to see Episode III and after the show, so stay tuned.
the geeks get the girls
The day began with a promising start, but midway through, it all began to crash. I’d like to think I’m a good multitasker, but today was ridiculous. Either that, or I suck at multitasking. Don’t feel like complaining, so I won’t.
I got rid of the main page, figuring the blog should be it. I will keep the other pages for my links. I was listening to Geek News Central‘s podcasts for the first time today, and the host, Todd, points out that you’re not podcasting unless you have an RSS feed. I do have one now, but I’m lacking in MP3 files. I’d like to do another one real soon, but I want to do it at the computer, not with my MD recorder. Have no idea when I’ll do that, though. The Geek podcast is a good one; informative with lots of tech news. I am a geek, always will be, and I’m proud to be one. Just wish I could spend more time being one!
slow progress
Web sites take a lot of work. And a lot of time. I’m learning that the hard way. I know for sure I won’t keep my blog on Blogger. Too much hassle to publish one thing to both places. I want to move most of what’s on my blog to my main homepage, but I need to manually write up a draft before I can tackle that. I hope to do another podcast soon. I was able to set up a feed so aggregators can download my podcasts (news aggregators can also download my blog posts).
It’s been a while since I talked about work. Pete’s out til Thursday; on vacation or at a seminar, who really knows. Sly has been doing his best to get a grasp on the daily functions of the dept. I like Sly, but I think he should slow down and take things one at a time. Me? I’m doing fine, but I still can’t get a handle on what it is I should be doing anymore. I feel like I’ve been demoted from an office manager to a secretary in less than 2 months. I don’t do things on my own anymore; I do what I’m asked or told. To tell you the truth – it really sucks.
podcast – lunch in the park
Got away for lunch today. Talked about long lunches, lack of web space, podcasts, and work.

Links of interest …
- Fan interferes as Sheffield tries to field 2-run triple – Thursday night, Gary Sheffield for the Yankees took a hit to the face as he was fielding a ball. What is the world coming to? The fans that act like this don’t deserve to ever attend another sporting event. You can boo and jeer and heckle them all you want, but when you want to get physical, be prepared to face the music. I know I’ll hear about this, but I feel if they stop serving alcohol – that might teach some people a lesson.
- Star Wars – Episode III tickets on sale now – Thanks to Donny for the update! D cannot wait to see this movie, and neither can I. I’ve been disappointed with the prequels to this point, and I’m anxious for the saga to go out with a major bang. It’s the episode SW fans have been waiting for. We know what happens; we just want to see it happen! I’m debating on when we’ll see it; D’s behavior needs to improve before I can say it’s ok to see it on opening day.
- OpenOffice.org – a free productivity suite that is compatible with Microsoft Office. I just downloaded this the other day. Our PC has a 60-day trial for Office 2003; I’m waiting to see if this is a better alternative (not to mention cheaper).
Pics of my niece Jasmine …
My podcasts are on hold until I can figure out where I can put them. “The DNT Show” will be on hiatus as well until D gets his act together – can you say “attitude”?
Hope everyone had a nice weekend; here we go with a new week. Have a good one!
weekend
This week is a blur. Podcasting has dominated my time since I acquired a microphone for recording. And D is anxious to hear what others think about our own podcast. I was finally able to upload it and create our site last night. Check it out – “The DNT Show“. Again, our podcasts are large files, so be patient in downloading (those of you who dial into the internet, I’m sorry).
I am terrible with birthdays. My niece Jasmine celebrated her 3rd on April 10, and I’m planning on sending her a gift, but I won’t be able to order it til next paycheck. She’s a fan of Dora the Explorer, and I saw a dollhouse on Amazon I’m sure she will enjoy. Some might think it costs too much, but I feel horrible that I’ve missed 3 birthdays now, and her Tito needs to make up for it. Also, a special belated birthday wish goes out to my brother-in-law, Steve. I’m sorry I missed yours as well (April 12). I STILL owe you a set of pictures (I need to get my act together).
A special mention (and long overdue congrats) to my cousin Rowena and her husband Dave on the birth of their son Hamilton Joseph. If I have their permission, I will post pics of the little guy; he looks like a Jose! (no offense, Dave)
Busy day (as usual); good thing it was Friday, and I got to leave early. I also made my rounds for the first time since I was caged in February. It was kind of liberating to see the building again and those I work with in their environment. I hope to do this more in the near future.
Well, I’m going to go relax; it’s Friday afternoon, the weekend, and I wanna enjoy it. You do the same!
DNT
D was so pysched about recording our own podcast that he wouldn’t stop talking about it. He kept throwing out ideas of what we would do and how we would do it. I needed to get D used to the whole recording thing, so we took Salem for a walk while I recorded. Well D started to script everything by acting like he was talking to an audience. I told him to not do that; I want him to be natural and be himself. When he first heard our test recordings, he was like, “I sound like a dork!” I told him that what he hears in his head is always different than what everyone else hears. In time, you’ll get used to it. We finally got started on the podcast after dinner.
I’m surprised we were able to get one done after roughly 2 takes, 2 phone calls, and nearly 2 hours of importing, editing, and recording! We call it “The DNT Show” (Danny and Teny) and it’s basically a review podcast where we talk about something and give our opinions. Our first one is about Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and it lasts 20 minutes. I honestly felt it sounded uninteresting. I didn’t feel any flow, and I think that stemmed from the fact that we were “performing” for an audience. Listening to our recordings earlier, those sounded natural. But the actual “show” was awkward; I think D tried to hard too shine. It doesn’t sound bad; besides, it was our first.
I still have to create a website to represent “The DNT Show” and provide links to the podcast (D’s classmate called when I got home and asked where he could download it, and we hadn’t even started!). Oh, and I don’t have enough webspace to store all the podcasts. I still haven’t posted part 2 of my walk! Podcasting takes a lot of time, and I don’t like hogging the computer, because once I get started, I can’t stop!
Anyway, I hope to have the DNT website up tonight, along with the 1st podcast.
my first podcast
Ordered the Lapel Mic Thursday, and got it Friday! Put it to use Saturday AM when I took the dog for a walk. Aside from occasional noise (wires rubbing together, the mic swung as I walked), it sounds great!! I used my MiniDisc recorder with my iPod headphones to monitor the sound. A lot of rambling, really. I noticed I seem to talk like Mr. Adam Curry – I must stop that immediately! This is my own podcast, and I have to be myself. It may sound loud, so be prepared to lower the volume. I had to split the MP3 file into 2 parts so people could download smaller files (plus I have limited webspace for now).
Here’s part 1:
Started recording when CL and I went to Waterloo and South County; after maybe 15 minutes she noticed I was taping and wanted me to stop, so I did. After talking to her today, she sounded as if she may allow me to post it. But she needs to listen to it first!
Tiger Woods wins his 4th Masters in a playoff with Chris DiMarco
Sunny day, and it hit 80! Actually, it all depended on what side of the street you were on; in Swansea, one bank sign said “83″ and another said “77″. Cut the grass today. I hope to spend more time outside next weekend.
It’ll take some time to get used to the technical side of podcasting. I’ll probably do this once a week. Until the next time … g’night!
